Tips for Driving Safely This Winter

With winter almost here, and temperatures plummeting already, it is important for motorists to begin changing their driving practices.  The risk of accidents increases when a motorist is driving in poor weather conditions, and winter provides plenty of such conditions.

Snowfall, slippery roads covered with ice and sleet, and snow storms can play havoc with your driving abilities.

One of the most important things that you should do as a motorist driving in winter is to make sure that your car is up to the task.  This should be done every time you drive.

The Colorado Department of Transportation recommends that drivers maintain low speeds.  The Colorado DOT conducts deicing of roads every winter, but even with this deicing the roads may be slippery and dangerous for you.

Keep plenty of windshield wiper fluid with you, because liquid deicers can stick to the windshields.  Avoid using cruise control when you’re driving in winter.  Use your accelerator pedal cautiously and sparingly.

Don’t make the mistake of assuming that you will find it easier to drive because you drive a four-wheel or all-wheel vehicle.  Leave plenty of following distance between your car and the car in front of you.

Make sure that your car has a full emergency kit.  It should include winter gear, including hats, gloves, and a blanket.  Also make sure that your kit includes flashlights, tire chains, nonperishable food, water, matches and flares.

The chances of skidding on slippery roads are much higher if you’re driving with worn-out and under-inflated tires.  Make sure that your tires are in optimum condition, that they are well inflated, and that they have good tread.

Before driving, check your local travel advisory to find out which roads and highways are not safe to use.
