Male Pedestrians at Higher Risk of Death in Car Accidents

Posted in Car Accident,Wrongful Death on May 24, 2013

Male pedestrians may need to be much more careful while out walking on the streets, than females.  According to new research, males may be at a much higher risk of being killed in accidents while walking, compared to females.

The study was conducted by researchers at the West Virginia University School of Public Health, and found that male pedestrians have a risk of dying in a car accident that is more than twice as high as that for females.  That was true even after the researchers accounted for factors like the age of the pedestrians as well as the amount of walking done by males and females every day.

The research found that male pedestrians are as much as 2.3 times more likely to die after being involved in a car accident, compared to females.  This is even though males and females tend to do the same amount of walking every day.

That means that even though both male and female pedestrians walk the same amount every day, male pedestrians are much more likely to succumb to injuries.  That doesn’t mean that male pedestrians are more likely to be involved in accidents, but that these pedestrians are more likely to sustain the kind of very serious injuries that result in death.

There are very interesting explanations for these statistics.  According to the researchers, although males are walking just as much as females are, they are probably more likely to engage in destructive or risky behaviors that cause them to suffer more severe injuries in the event of an accident.  For instance, males are much more likely to cross roads with a limit of more than 50 mph, and this means that they are more likely to be hit at high-speed by vehicles.  This results in serious injuries that could lead to death.  Learn more at: www.zanerhardenlaw.com.
